William B. Purvis - Various Inventions
William B. Purvis
August 12, 1838 - August 10, 1914
William B. Purvis was born on August 12, 1838, in Philadelphia, PA. He was an inventor and secured several patents throughout his life. When William was 45 years old, he received his first patent for improving the hand stamp which replenished its own ink.
Even though William's first company, the Sterling Paper Bag Company established in 1883 closed down in 1894 while holding 12 patents on paper bag manufacturing machines, he didn't give up on his inventions. William's uncle paid off the Sterling Paper Bag Company's debts. He was successful in selling his patents to Eastern Paper Bag Company and Union Bag Company of New York.
He went on to acquire more patents including a magnetic car balancing device and a close conduit electric railway system. The close conduit electric railway system was adopted in New Jersey originally. It replaced the old system. William Purvis launched the Union Electric Construction Company with several other investors supporting railway systems using his patents.
